Step One: Scroll through your document and determine where the page numbering changes. Most often, the two main sections are: Front Matter and Body. Front matter consists of any page that comes before the Body: Front matter can include the title page, abstract, acknowledgements, table of contents, list of abbreviations, and so on. Modifying page numbers with section breaks Place your cursor on the page where you want the first section to end. Go to the Page Layout tab, then click the Breaks command. Choose Next Page from the menu. A section break will be added, creating a new section on the next page.
To format page numbers to include appendix numbering, follow these steps: Move the insertion point to the page that contains the first appendix title. On the Insert menu, click Page Numbers. Appendices should be designated with letters. The figures and tables are numbered in the straight numbering style. This means that the figures and tables are numbered consecutively throughout the document. The Appendices should follow the References/Bibliography unless your Appendices include citations or footnotes.
