How to Include initials in text

A common question we are asked is why EndNote has included author initials or first names in in-text citations. For some referencing styles, additional author information is included to distinguish between different citations where the first authors listed share the same surname or family name. Here you can see we have two references where initials have been included because the first authors listed both have the surname and EndNote is correctly displaying according to the requirements of the style. However; you may find in some cases that initials have been included for publications that are by the same author. This is because the authors name has been entered inconsistently in the EndNote references so EndNote treats them as different authors. To amend this, you need to edit the references in EndNote so the authors name appears the same in each record. In your EndNote Library perform a quick search for the authors surname to identify all references which include that author. Open

In-text references or citations are used to acknowledge the work or ideas of others. They are placed next to the text that you have paraphrased or quoted, enabling the reader to differentiate between your writing and other peoples work. The full details of your in-text references must be included in a reference list.
Authors, editors, and creators are listed at the beginning of the citation with the last name first, followed by the first initial and the middle initial. If no middle initial is provided, then leave it out.
The general form is (Author, date), within parentheses. Parenthetical citation is also known as information-prominent citation: it is used to emphasise the information being cited. A parenthetical citation should directly follow the idea being cited. Include it within the punctuation of the sentence.
Treat the Initials as Representing a First and Last Name List the entry under the last initial. Among other anti-Pamelists is J W, author of Pamela; or, The Fair Imposter.
When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the authors last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998), and a complete reference should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
The family name must be written in full and initials used to represent given (first) names. You only need to provide initials for the first and middle names, but do include initials for all middle names provided by the source.
