Today we are going to run SQL queries against a table containing ten THOUSAND records. {{ Maniacal laughter }} {{ Phone call }} What is it, Im in the middle of a video You dont say? ALL in RAM? Well, alrighty then Today we are going to run SQL queries against a table containing one .. Hundred .. MILLION records. {{ Maniacal laughter }} But dont worry. By using indexes, we can rapidly speed up queries so you do not have to experience the phenomenon known as boredom. We will work with a single table called person containing 100 MILLION randomly generated people. The first row is an auto-generated primary key called personid The other columns are firstname lastname and birthday. To create this table, we randomly generated names using the 1000 most popular female names, male names, and last names in the United States. We did not weight the names by frequency when generating our random sample. The datasets and the Python code used to generate the random names are available

The Include Clause. The include clause allows us to make a distinction between columns we would like to have in the entire index (key columns) and columns we only need in the leaf nodes ( include columns). That means it allows us to remove columns from the non-leaf nodes if we dont need them there.
An index, within a library setting, is a list of articles or other publications within a discipline or topic. It provides bibliographic information such as author(s), title, where it was published (see image, Example of a Print Index), and sometimes abstracts.
An index is a list of all the names, subjects and ideas in a piece of written work, designed to help readers quickly find where they are discussed in the text. Usually found at the end of the text, an index doesnt just list the content (thats what a table of contents is for), it analyses it.
To see indexes for all tables within a specific schema you can use the STATISTICS table from INFORMATIONSCHEMA: SELECT DISTINCT TABLENAME, INDEXNAME FROM INFORMATIONSCHEMA. STATISTICS WHERE TABLESCHEMA = yourschema; Removing the where clause will show you all indexes in all schemas.
Indexing is the way to get an unordered table into an order that will maximize the querys efficiency while searching. When a table is unindexed, the order of the rows will likely not be discernible by the query as optimized in any way, and your query will therefore have to search through the rows linearly.
An index with included columns can greatly improve query performance because all columns in the query are included in the index; The query optimizer can locate all columns values within the index without accessing table or clustered index resulting in fewer disk I/O operations.
Included columns can be used to create a covering indexes without including all the data into the key columns. This covering index has the advantage that the index contains all the columns that are needed for a query.
The SQL INCLUDE specifies the SQL table information to be used to generate field definitions. It names the table and gives the location where the field definitions are to be generated. SQL INCLUDE ( column ) LOCATION starting-position * + offset W S HEADING UPDATE NULLABLE FROM owner . TABLE.
