What is included in ASC billing?

An ASC uses a combination of physician and hospital or clinical billing, employing the CPT and HCPCS level codes (as do most physicians), some insurance carriers permit an ASC to bill using ICD-10 procedure codes as does a hospital.

What is the 1 3 rule for ASC?

At least 1/3 of each physician investors medical practice income from all sources for the previous fiscal year or previous 12 month period must be derived from the physicians performance of procedures that require an ASC or hospital surgical setting in ance with Medicare reimbursement rules.

What modifiers can be used in an ASC?

ASCs use modifier -74 for surgical procedures terminated after administration of anesthesia or initiation of the procedure. Contractors make full payment for the surgical procedure if a medical complication arises causing the procedure to be terminated after anesthesia has been induced or the procedure initiated.

Can a modifier 50 be used in an ASC?

While use of the 50 modifier is not prohibited ing to Medicare billing instructions, the modifier is not recognized for payment purposes and if used by ASCs, may result in incorrect payment.

What are C codes in the ASC?

C codes are unique temporary codes and are only valid for claims for HOPD and ASC services and procedures. CMS estimates that ASC services, in general, are paid approximately 55 percent of the HOPD rate for similar services in CY 2021.

Can an ASC use modifier 59?

MODIFIERS 59, XE, XS, XP, AND XU Modifier 59 is an accepted modifier on ASC facility claims. NCCI will eventually require the use of these modifiers rather than modifier 59 with certain edits.

Most of the procedures performed in ASCs have a global period of 10 or 90 days, but that global period applies to the operating physicians claims not the facilitys claims. Therefore, ASC coders will rarely need to use modifiers 78 or 79.
