So imagine that you have a school report that youre working on, or maybe youre turning in a project for work, and youve got lots of pages and lots of sections in there. Well, a table of contents can make it easier to get back to the content that people want to refer back to. So how do you do that? Its actually easier than you think. And Ive pulled up a sample school report here. I know Ive been out of school for a little while, but brings back memories when I jump into this. Lets jump on my PC and Ill show you how to do this. In more formal texts, such as theses and dissertations, it is common that page numbers only start with the introduction or background. In other words, the pages that include your title, abstract and table of contents are usually not numbered.
Yes, Introduction and Conclusions are core parts that need to be included in a ToC. Note that it is not necessary that the chapters have these titles although in the vast majority of cases they do.
On the toolbar ribbon, select References. Near the left end, select Insert Table of Contents. (Or select Table of Contents Insert Table of Contents. The table of contents is inserted, showing the headings and page numbering in your document.
Start page numbering later in your document Go to Insert Header or Footer Edit Header or Edit Footer. Select Different First Page. In the header or footer area, you should see a label on the first page that says First Page Header. Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.
