During ACL reconstruction, the torn ligament is removed and replaced with a band of tissue that usually connects muscle to bone (tendon). The graft tendon is taken from another part of your knee or from a deceased donor.
ACL Reconstruction Is Major Surgery Youre given general anesthesia. This means youre unconscious for the procedure. Youll have pain, swelling and stiffness after the surgery. It can be two or three weeks before you walk without crutches.
ACL reconstruction surgery is performed using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques, in which a combination of fiber optics, small incisions and small instruments are used. A somewhat larger incision is needed, however, to obtain the tissue graft.
Graft Strength Ultimately this graft (and all implanted grafts) loses about half its strength so that its ultimate strength, based on animal studies, is estimated to be about 1.2 times stronger than the original ACL.
Reconstructive ACL surgery The ACL can be reconstructed by removing what remains of the torn ligament and replacing it with a tendon from another area of the leg, such as the hamstring or patellar tendon. The patellar tendon attaches the bottom of the kneecap (patella) to the top of the shinbone (tibia).
ACL reconstruction has been around for decades and has been the go-to procedure for torn ligaments. Reconstruction has a high success rate but can take 6-12 months for a full recovery. ACL repair seeks to keep the patients ligament in place to promote self-healing. The ligament may also require stem cells.
ACL reconstruction is the current standard-of-care surgical treatment for ACL tears. This procedure typically uses a graft, or a piece of tissue, placed in the knee in a minimally invasive surgery that uses small incisions. Most ACL surgeries performed at HSS are ACL reconstructions.
What Is ACL Reconstruction? A torn ACL usually is treated with a procedure called an ACL reconstruction. Surgeons replace the damaged ligament with new ACL graft tissue either taken from the patients own body (tissue from the main patellar tendon or the hamstring) or donated from someone else (called an allograft).
