Commas should be used when three or more items in a series are listed. A comma should be placed between each of the three items (it is also acceptable to leave out the comma between the second-to-last item and the last item in the series).
However, if you use it at the beginning of a sentence, you would use a comma. For example: In order to get better grades, I need to study more. In order to graduate on time, i have to go to summer school. In order not to miss my bus, I always leave ten minutes early.
Do not use a comma if a sentence contains a list of only two items, even if each item is described with many words. Example: I like apples baked with walnuts and bananas topped with chocolate and whipped cream.
As mentioned above, when you are listing three or more items, commas should separate each element of the list. However, the final commathe one that comes before the andis optional. This comma is called the serial comma or the Oxford comma. Whether or not you use the serial comma is a style choice.
Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet. Example: I love vanilla ice cream, but my brother prefers chocolate. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.
Remember, you must not join two complete sentences with a comma, but three or more complete sentences may be joined with listing commas plus and or or. The Three Musketeers were Athos, Porthos, and Aramis.
A. No punctuation is required, but commas after including and to would work just fine; they may be helpful if the phrase introduces a long or complex list.
Use a listing comma in a list wherever you could conceivably use the word and (or or) instead. Do not use a listing comma anywhere else. Put a listing comma before and or or only if this is necessary to make your meaning clear.
