Hi. Im Rebecca from engVid. In this lesson, Im going to show you a small trick that you can use to improve your English writing, especially when youre writing complex sentences. Im going to explain to you exactly what a complex sentence is, and also how to punctuate it properly so that you can get a higher mark if youre going for your exam, like the IELTS or the TOEFL, or if youre submitting an essay at university, if youre writing a business report, or if youre applying for a job. Okay? Because this little comma, this little punctuation mark makes the difference between a correct sentence and an incorrect sentence. All right? And Ill show you exactly when to use it and how to use it. Okay? So, lets get started. Now, first of all, what is a complex sentence? A complex sentence in English is a sentence which has an independent clause and a dependent clause. Okay, thats great, you say, but whats a clause? Okay. Not Santa Claus. Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet. Example: I love vanilla ice cream, but my brother prefers chocolate. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.
Most of the special characters except hyphens are not allowed in a (second level) domain. Things like an underscore, period, comma, apostrophe, exclamation mark, question mark, ampersand, bracket are not valid options. Some special characters are not allowed in a domain name because they are reserved for other cases.
Answer: While its definitely possible to use commas in URLs, its not a widely used practice, nor is it recommended.
The character % is unsafe because it is used for encodings of other characters. Other characters are unsafe because gateways and other transport agents are known to sometimes modify such characters. These characters are { , } , | , \ , ^ , ~ , [ , ] , and ` . All unsafe characters must always be encoded within a URL.
Sometimes website systems dont handle special characters very well, ending up in creating partial URLs for links. Commas will work but there will be a little mess when exporting URLs to CSV/Excel :) Standard is to use - or . But commas will work - you dont have to change URLs.
Commas are used to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses in a series. This means that when three or more items are being listed in a sentence, a comma goes between each item in the list. For example: John went to the grocery store and bought bread, milk, butter, macaroni and cheese.
If you google how to URL encode a comma, youll find things like this. In short, use %2C instead of comma in a URL. That being said, any good URL building library should handle that automatically for you.
