The comma before and (or comma before or) at the end of a list is optional. Its referred to as an Oxford comma or serial comma. Most academic style guides recommend adding it (salt, pepper, and paprika).
In Lists. A comma is used before and possibly after a name in a list of three or more items to separate the items and provide clarity in writing. The comma before the last item is known as the Oxford comma or serial comma.
Punctuation for Lists of Items Within a Sentence Use commas after each item in a list of three or more items. Nurses monitor a patients vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and pulse. Use semi-colons after each item in a list if one or more items already includes a comma.
Commas should be used when three or more items in a series are listed. A comma should be placed between each of the three items (it is also acceptable to leave out the comma between the second-to-last item and the last item in the series).
As mentioned above, when you are listing three or more items, commas should separate each element of the list. However, the final commathe one that comes before the andis optional. This comma is called the serial comma or the Oxford comma. Whether or not you use the serial comma is a style choice.
Comma Rule 3 probably doesnt sound like fun, but it is. It goes by some boring and very technical names (appositive, non-restrictive clause, interrupter). The basic idea, though, is easy: Use a pair of commas when your voice drops. One comma takes your voice down, and another brings your voice back up.
So the rules are clear: Use a listing comma in a list wherever you could conceivably use the word and (or or) instead. Do not use a listing comma anywhere else. Put a listing comma before and or or only if this is necessary to make your meaning clear.
