hello everyone welcome to Sparkle English in this lesson Im going to teach you about eight basic comma rules and these are English writing essentials it is very important to have proper punctuation and to use commas correctly when youre writing in English so lets get started I recommend you grab a pen and paper or something to take notes because we will be doing a little bit of practice as we go along for each rule so lets get started rule number one use commas to separate items in a series of three or more things remember that an item may refer to a noun verb or adjective phrase and note that the usage of a comma to separate the second to last item is optional we call this an Oxford comma I like to use it but its not necessary so examples I bought cheese and bread as you can see these are only two different items so you dont need to put a comma but if you had three items I bought ham comma cheese comma and bread then you would put commas after him and after cheese again this one

As a result, you would use double quotation marks as you normally wouldaround the entire line of dialogueand use single quotation marks for the words the speaker is quoting. Lets say Fred said, I cant keep it together anymore. And lets say Mary wants to repeat these exact words to a friend.
With dialogue, specific punctuation is needed. Most often, commas and periods go within the quotation marks, but there are some forms of punctuation and examples that go outside of the quotation marks.
Put commas and periods within quotation marks, except when a parenthetical reference follows. He said, I may forget your name, but I never forget a face. History is stained with blood spilled in the name of civilization.
Rewriting the 7 Rules of Dialogue Dialogue should stay on topic. Use dialogue as you would actual speech. Opt for the speaker attribution said over all others. Avoid long speeches. Be grammatically correct. Show what the characters are doing while theyre talking. Keep characters speech consistent.
When you are quoting a sentence or phrase that comes at the end of your sentence, the period should always go before the last quotation mark, even if its not the end of the sentence in the original source. Commas should also always go inside the quotation mark.
Where Should You Put Commas for Quoted Titles? You need to use quotation marks for the titles of articles, short stories, poems, and other similar forms of media. American style guides say that commas should always go before the closing quotation mark, even when youre working with titles.
Dialogue is a conversation between two or more people. The most basic rule of dialogue is that it must be enclosed by quotation marks. The second important rule is that all punctuation must be within the quotation marks, whether its a comma, period, question mark, or exclamation point.
All punctuation in a piece of dialogue goes inside the quotation marks. Quoted dialogue within a line of dialogue goes inside single quotation marks (I told my brother, Dont do my homework for me. But he did it anyway!). In UK English, quoted dialogue within a line of dialogue goes inside double quotation marks.
