Included columns in a non-clustered index can only be the non-key columns. In the included columns the storage only happens on the leaf level of the index, contrary to the key column of an index. The key column of an index is stored at all levels.
The Include Clause. The include clause allows us to make a distinction between columns we would like to have in the entire index (key columns) and columns we only need in the leaf nodes ( include columns). That means it allows us to remove columns from the non-leaf nodes if we dont need them there.
Non-Clustered index is created by adding key columns that are restricted in the number, type and size of these columns. To overcome these restrictions in the index keys, you could add a non-key columns when creating a non-clustered index, which are the Included Columns.
Included columns can be used to create a covering indexes without including all the data into the key columns. This covering index has the advantage that the index contains all the columns that are needed for a query.
As per my understanding the leaf level of the clustered index are the actual data pages itself, and it stores entire row include with the key column (on which index is created). By definition a clustered index includes all columns so there are none left to include.
The syntax for creating an index with included columns First, specify the name of the index after CREATE INDEX clause. Second, specify the name of the table and a list of key column list for the index after the ON clause. Third, list a comma-separated list of included columns in the INCLUDE clause.
Hi, Id like to point out that a covered index contains all columns in every node of the index while a index with included columns only contains all columns on the leaf level.
The SQL INCLUDE specifies the SQL table information to be used to generate field definitions. It names the table and gives the location where the field definitions are to be generated. A list of columns to be included. The Easytrieve field names are generated for these columns.
