The folder for CGI scripts is what we call the cgi-bin. It is created in the directory root of your website and where your scripts are permitted to run or execute. The cgi-bin folder will store the scripts such as Perl (. pl) used by your website.
CGI scripts must output one of the following three headers: A Content-type header specifying the media type of the content that will follow. A Location header specifying a URL to redirect the client to. A Status header with a status that does not require additional data, such as 204 No Response.
Default cgi-bin directory locations: Red Hat/CentOS/Rocky/Alma Linux: /var//cgi-bin/ Fedora Linux: /var//cgi-bin/ Debian or Ubuntu Linux: /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ FreeBSD Unix: /usr/local//cgi-bin/
CGI Environment Variables SERVERSOFTWARE. The name and version of the information server software answering the request (and running the gateway). SERVERNAME. The servers hostname, DNS alias, or IP address as it would appear in self-referencing URLs. GATEWAYINTERFACE.
An example of a CGI program is one implementing a wiki. If the user agent requests the name of an entry, the Web server executes the CGI program. The CGI program retrieves the source of that entrys page (if one exists), transforms it into HTML, and prints the result.
CGI scripts are often stored in the cgi-bin folder within a website directory on a web server and can only be edited if they are not pre-compiled. CGI scripts are often used for running basic web scripts.
The first line of output for most CGI programs must be an HTTP header that tells the client Web browser what type of output it is sending back via STDOUT. Only scripts that are called from a server-side include are exempt from this requirement. All HTTP headers must be followed by a blank line.
cgi-bin/ means that the DNS zone hasnt got updated yet and that you dont have an index file in your publichtml directory.
In general, the headers you generate from a CGI program can be output in any order you like. The header block has to end with a blank line. HTTP is a very simple protocol. The way the server knows that youre done with your header information is that it looks for a blank line.
The output header of a CGI script must specify an output type to tell the server and eventually browser how to proceed with the rest of the CGI output.
