hi everyone in this video im going to explain what basic authentication is and how its used in under five minutes lets jump into it first off dont confuse this with a basic example of authentication basic authentication is a mechanism or scheme in which a client can authenticate with a web server using a username and password when a client connects to the server the username and password are encoded as an http header okay ill open my browser to show off a quick example so you can see what im talking about im going to make sure i have dev tools open and im on the network tab as well so if i go to an example page https local.example this page will prompt me for my username and password this is built into the browser it is not part of the web page i didnt write any html for this the browser made a request to the server the server responded with a 401 status code that triggered the browser to prompt me to enter a username and password and when i do that theyre going to be sent to

Basic Authentication Flow A REST request can have a special header called Authorization Header, this header can contain the credentials (username and password) in some form. Once a request with Authorization Header is received, the server can validate the credentials and can let you access the private resources.
Users of the REST API can authenticate by providing their user ID and password within an HTTP header. To use this method of authentication with HTTP methods, such as POST, PATCH, and DELETE, the ibm-mq-rest-csrf- HTTP header must also be provided, as well as a user ID and password.
Basic authentication sends user names and passwords over the Internet as text that is Base64 encoded, and the target server is not authenticated. This form of authentication can expose user names and passwords. If someone can intercept the transmission, the user name and password information can easily be decoded.
Basic authentication works as follows: If a request requires authentication, the server returns 401 (Unauthorized). The response includes a -Authenticate header, indicating the server supports Basic authentication. The client sends another request, with the client credentials in the Authorization header.
To authenticate API requests, you can use basic authentication with your email address and password, your email address and an API , or an OAuth access . All methods of authentication set the authorization header differently. Credentials sent in the payload or URL are not processed.
