You can insert field codes in Word in two ways: typing directly or using the Insert tab. For the first method, press Ctrl + F9 to insert empty field code, then type the code within curly brackets (e.g. date). Click 'Update' to add date to the document. The second method involves selecting 'Field' from Explore Quick Parts in the Insert tab, choosing the code (e.g. time), and clicking 'OK' to add it to the document.

Pages, Captions and Footnotes are examples of numbering done with fields. A field in a Word document is simply a placeholder that contains the instructions for working out what should go here, rather than the text itself.
