Whats The Difference? The main difference between a physical therapist and a doctor of physical therapy is that the latter has a doctorate. However, both have extensive knowledge of the human body and its movement. They train and use what they have learned to help people improve their movement and function.
Doctor of Physical Therapy A physical therapist who has obtained their Doctorate of Physical Therapy will hold a DPT credential. This means they completed a clinical program from an accredited university and passed their board of certification examination.
The title should be listed first after the persons name, i.e., Jane Smith, PT, MSPT, DPT, OCS. Use of the title doctor when offering to perform professional services must indicate the profession in which the licensee holds a doctorate (i.e., Dr. Jane Smith, P.T.).
MPT and MSPT stand for Master of Physical Therapy and Master of Science in Physical Therapy. They are earned through an advanced course of study and are the second highest academic degrees held by physical therapists.
