Yes. You do not necessarily have the right to choose when you take your holiday and your employer can tell you when to take your leave. However, your employer has to give you two days notice for every day they want you to take.
Paid time off (PTO) is a human resource management (HRM) policy that provides employees with a pool of bankable hours that can be used for any purpose. Also known as personal time off, the acronym PTO is generally used to describe any period of time that an employee is paid while taking leave from work.
Full-time workers who work 5 days a week are entitled to up to 28 days (5 x 5.6) of paid holiday. If an employer includes bank holidays in annual leave, workers are entitled to 8 days off for holidays and an additional 20 days. Employers are not required to give paid leave for bank or public holidays.
TOIL essentially has to be an agreement between you and your employees. If you agree with an employee that you will reward overtime with TOIL, then you should confirm your agreement in writing. It is also a good idea to enforce an expiry date for taking any accumulated TOIL.
Time Off In Lieu often abbreviated to TOIL is time off for an employee, used instead of overtime pay, for hours worked beyond an employees contracted hours.
Time off in lieu (TOIL) Some employers give you time off instead of paying for overtime. This is known as time off in lieu.
Lieu time is time taken off in lieu of being paid overtime that has been earned. Overtime and lieu time are earned through pre-authorized work performed in excess of the employees normal work week hours (35, 36.25, 37.5 or 40 hours per week).
For example, if a person normally works 5 hours on a Sunday but is required to work 2 extra hours on a Sunday then this will be at 2x as detailed in Operation of TOIL above. There is no monetary alternative to TOIL at any point and any TOIL that is not used in line with this policy will be lost.
