- I was told I was getting a job and then that job offer was revoked. I made one fatal mistake. And after coaching thousands of people in the job search as a career strategist, Ive seen that you may have made this mistake too. Here is the story of what happened to me, my biggest regret, and there is a twist ending that you wont see coming. This is Self Made Millennial, Im Madeline Mann. Im a human resources leader and job search strategist. You may have seen me in these places, new videos on Thursdays. This all begins where I was interviewing for a job that truly seemed perfect. It was the right title, it was a really easy commute, 10 minutes away from where I lived, and seemed like a great company in my target industry. I got on to the first round interview and the recruiter, his name is Michael, he was talking to me and he said, wow, you are absolutely the perfect candidate for this role, Im so excited to pass you along to the hiring team for a second round interview. Dont share the offer letter. That company has no right to ask to see that offer letter, and you are not obliged to share it with anyone.
Yes. You should definitely tell a company that you just received an offer from another employer. This can work to your advantage in two ways: First of all, it could potentially expedite the process at this current company.
It is generally not advisable to show your offer letter from one company to another. Offer letters often contain confidential information, such as salary and benefits, that should not be shared with others without permission.
Dont make promises. Avoid making any promises or statements that can be construed as promises related to the length or permanency of the employment relationship. Clearly indicate in the offer that the individualif they acceptwill be an at-will employee and any offer letter doesnt constitute an employment contract.
However, if you cant see any strategic reason to mention your other offers or the fact that youre being considered for multiple jobs, then it may be best to simply proceed with your other interviews as normal and not mention your other offers. If other employers need to know this info, they can ask.
6. Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreements. Non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements are standard practice in offer letters. Typically, they state that you must keep sensitive information that you learn in your tenure at a company private, or else face consequences such as firing or lawsuits.
You can decline a job offer after accepting it with at-will employment. There are exceptions, and you may want to consult an attorney if you are unsure. While it may not be ideal for the hiring organization, it may work out for the best for them if you rescind your acceptance before you start work.
In the event you need to rescind a job offer, you should accompany a phone call with a notice in writing. While a properly worded offer letter should clearly state that it is not a contract, a formal notice acts as an official record and a deterrent against any legal action.
