Hi, Philip Chesney here from English Interviews. In todays video, we are going to see how to request a reference letter. We will see some tips along with some Dos and Donts for reference letters. Lets go ahead and dive in. As we interview at different companies, some of them may ask for a reference letter. In the past, it was more common to give a hard-copy, nowadays, it is more than likely you will have your reference send an email directly or provide you with a signed PDF. First thing is first, make sure you hand pick your reference. In many situations, he or she may have to speak with someone from HR, write a letter, or possibly fill out a questionnaire, so it is important that this person is solid and knows you well. Are backdoor reference checks legal? Yes, backdoor reference checks are legal as long as the candidate has given you permission to conduct them.
Even someone you worked for a few years back could prevent you from getting a job if they give a company reason to be concerned about hiring you. Some companies have a policy of not providing anything beyond basic verification information like start and end dates and position(s) held.
Do employers always check references? Essentially, yes. While its true that not 100% of Human Resources (HR) departments will call your references during pre-employment screening, most do. If youre about to begin a job search, you should expect to have your references checked.
Legally, yes, you can contact references without permission and backdoor reference checking isnt illegal. The decision is up to you, but its highly recommended that you respect the candidates request not to contact certain references.
You shouldnt discuss personal details about an employee, which can include references to her race, religion, age or disability status. Also, you should never discuss ethnic origin, marital status, parenting responsibilities or sexual orientation during a reference request.
If the initial reference has yet to respond to your requests, then consider selecting another to speak on your behalf. The hiring employer may have a deadline to submit your references contact information so finding a new one can help you be more productive with your time.
If youre a recent graduate or just entered the workforce, you may not have previous employment, but its best not to leave the reference section blank. When youve never had a job, list non-family references who can verify your education, achievements and values.
1) Look for unprepared, blind references. Blind references are those beyond the obvious ones that your candidate will give you and usually, therefore, ones that will offer an unvarnished view.
