An ISO Business Auto Policy (BAP) is written on several vehicles with Symbol 1(Any Auto) for liability and Symbol 7(Specifically Scheduled Vehicles only) for physical damage.
Symbol 1 is any auto. The auto does not have to be declared and when it was purchased makes no difference. With symbol 1, the liability claim is covered. Symbol 1 covers any auto (owned, borrowed, rented, hired) for liability.
Symbol 1- Any Auto is the most comprehensive coverage option available on a Commercial Car insurance policy. It includes coverage for scheduled, hired, and non-owned autos, as well as other types of vehicles that may be involved in use for your business.
What is the purpose of the symbols listed in a business auto policy (BAP)? They identify the insurance company that provides the coverage.
Symbol 5 is used to provide no-fault coverage for autos you own when such coverage is required by law. No-fault auto laws exist in twelve states and Puerto Rico. 4 Symbol 6 is used to trigger uninsured motorist coverage for autos you own.
A common alternative to Symbol 1 on your auto commercial insurance is a combination of Symbols 7, 8 and 9. The benefit of this combination is potentially lower premiums due to coverage extending only to specifically described, hired, and non-owned autos, rather than any auto.
For example, Symbol 1 extends protection to Any Auto, while Symbol 7 provides coverage for only Specifically Described Autos. (See the BAP for each symbols definition.)
7 = Specifically Described Autos. Only those autos that are specifically listed on the policy are covered. The symbol also applies to any trailer while it is towed by a listed vehicle. 8 = Hired Autos Only.
Definition: Covered Auto Symbols. The Business Auto Policy uses numeric symbols to indicate the types of vehicles for which coverage is in effect. Only those symbols listed for a coverage can be used. Symbols 1 through 6 provide vehicle automatic coverage.
Symbol 31 covers dealers autos and autos held for sale by non-dealers or trailer dealers. This is used for physical damage coverage. Since the liability coverage part covers both CGL-type exposures and auto-type exposures, the policy includes two definitions of who is an insured.
