Traditionally, the signature is placed in the lower left corner on the front of the work. This is where a collector or buyer will look first for the signature. Some artists incorporate their signature into the painting, hiding it in a bush or tree so it doesnt interfere with the painting.
Sign all of your art in more or less the same way. Signatures should be consistent in size, coloration, location, style (written or printed), and other particulars. That way, people who do not know your art will have an easier time recognizing your work.
Scratch your name into wet paint with a pencil (so graphite is applied as well as the name being etched into the surface of the painting). For acrylic painters: use an acrylic paint marker or fluid acrylic paint and a fine round or rigger brush to achieve thin flowing lines.
Tips for Making an Artist Signature Make Sure Its Legible. First and foremost, your signature should be legible. Using Your Full Name vs. Initials. Sign At the Right Time. As a best practice, sign your work as soon as its complete. Keep Framing in Mind. Use a Straight Edge. Create a Digital Signature that Can Be Reused.
It is always important to sign the actual print, even if you choose to sign the back. Bear in mind that a mount board aperture or frame could hide your signature on the print. Therefore generally artists and photographers tend to sign their print just below the image.
For names of artwork, always use italics or underlining: ex. We have a copy of Edward Hoppers painting Nighthawks in the Writing Center lobby.
A monogram is a symbol an artist adopts as a signature. Signatures or monograms can be found at the bottom margin of the painting or on the back of the canvas. In the case of a monogram, you can use an artist monogram database to match the monogram to the artist.
