My surnames fab! Yeah, well its a big deal isnt it? I think we always imagine that all the generations of women before us were perfectly happy to lose their maiden name and take their husbands name. And Im sure thats not true. So, in Britain, patrilineal surnames go down through the male line, down through the generations. Surname systems arent the same all the way around the world. Yes, smash the patriarchy. I had read about a couple where the husband took the wifes name and I thought, Oh thats interesting. You said, Its our choice and if it means that much to you then Ill take your name. And I cried. But my dad was really confused, and its his name. He was just like, Is that legal? Like, Yes. I was Brian Macken. And I was Rhona Wells. And then afterwards we were both Mackenwells, one word without a dash in between. And I really wanted us to be all one name, sort of family unit. I believe theres a rabbit farm somewhere in the north of England that is called Macken

An individual who is known and addressed by a mononym is a mononymous person.
It is possible. Some people do have only the one name in their passport in some nations.
Secondary meaning exists when consumers recognize the surname trademark as a signifier that distinguishes the goods or services of one seller from another.
Nevertheless as a person is normally called and known by something a person will always have a name of some kind. Its possible to have a single name that is a first name only, and no surname (although the single name could still consist of more than one word or name).
Some examples are Smith and Wesson or Johnson Johnson. The historical significance of the surname - For example, a surname that is rare and associated with a traditional trade has a better chance of being included in the Principal Register than one that is common and has no other connection with the business.
First name and surname (For most people your title is not a part of your legal name. A title of nobility though is different its another separate part of your legal name.) It isnt a legal requirement to have either a first name or a surname.
There is no law requiring a person to have a surname in the U.K., even if most people do have a surname. Neither is there any law requiring a person to have a first name. Although all births must be registered, the law does not require a first name to be given.
Do not use initials. If you dont have a family name on your passport, travel or identity document, enter all your given name(s) in the surname field and leave the given name field blank. Do not enter Not applicable, * or NA.
