The components of an access level include: Administrator: Full access to the system. Standard: Limited access to the system. Guest: No access to the system. Read-only: The user can only view data in the database. Select: The user can select data from the database.
Roles provide a way for community administrators to group permissions and assign them to users or user groups. Permissions define the actions that a user can perform in a community.
A role defines the privileges that a user or group will have for a specific set of models in Looker. You create a role by combining one permission set with one model set. A permission set defines what a user or group can do. You select a combination of permissions that you want to assign to a user or group.
Create a limited connection in Looker: From the Connections page in the Admin panel, add a new connection specifically for the restricted database user. Alternatively, you can leverage parameterized connections on an already existing connection to make the connection specific to the user running a query.
The best practice is to assign roles based only on group membership whenever possible. Most users should be Viewers of the Shared folder (except in closed system setups). This ensures that users will be able to see content in the Shared folders and any subfolders to which they have access.
Control developer access to database connections To do so: Create a project that restricts a certain number of models to a certain number of database connections. This is done on the Looker Manage Projects page. Create a model set that contains at least one of the models in the project, then assign it to a role.
Adding roles to groups To assign a role to a group, use the Roles page in the Users section of the Admin menu. From there, you can edit the role and assign a group or groups to that role. For more information, see the Roles documentation page.
To allow users to view dashboards, you also need to give the user access to the folder or folders in which the dashboard or dashboards are saved. Under Admin Content Access, highlight the folder or folders that you want users to access, and select Manage Access.
