Using pencils or pens for the Signature When is comes to signing fine art prints, you need the right tool! We would suggest using a pencil on matt papers such as the Hahnemhle Museum Etching. Here at The Artists Print Room, we always recommend a mechanical pencil such as a Pentel P209 with a 2B lead.
Its a way of saying, That piece is complete, dont rework it. Its an honest, personal mark that stops them endlessly returning to a piece. Signatures are also commonly used to keep a record of time, place and medium, as much as they are a signifier of a completed work.
No matter where you sign your prints, make sure you are not using anything that will bleed or cause your prints to yellow. Paper prints, and the back of canvas prints, should be signed with pencil. Pens, sharpies, and other markers can bleed and cause your paper prints to yellow over time.
Limited edition prints are usually numbered in pencil to reduce risk of fraud as computers cannot trace pencil marks.
Slip your signature somewhere in the middle of the piece. Even if you sign the artwork at the bottom or on the back, the signature might be lost. This is an especially valuable technique for digital artists because a signature in the middle of the work isnt so easily cropped out.
Signatures or monograms can be found at the bottom margin of the painting or on the back of the canvas. In the case of a monogram, you can use an artist monogram database to match the monogram to the artist.
Measuring with a pencil serves four purposes: Checking proportions in a drawing; 3. Measuring angles on a model and checking them in your drawing; 4.
Signing and Numbering the Print The standard is to sign the print at the bottom right hand corner below the impression, the edition number on the bottom left hand corner and the title, if any, in the center.
