Fields marked with * are mandatory Using an asterisk (*) symbol content authors notify mandatory field. This is said to be one of the accessible modes of identifying a mandatory field, however this method also will be a problem with screen readers in certain times.
Click the control that you want to make required. On the Format menu, click Control Properties. Click the Data tab. Under Validation and Rules, select the Cannot be blank check box.
Summary: Using an asterisk to mark required fields is an easy way to improve the usability of your forms. There are a few problems: People dont read instructions at the top of forms. Even if people read instructions, they may forget them. People have to scan the form to determine if the field is required.
Asterisk (*) next to a form controls label usually indicates it as required. Oftentimes, this asterisks purpose is then explained somewhere else on the page. Many users (especially screen reader users) may be confused with that, so be sure to make this information is easily accessible.
Asterisk (*) next to a form controls label usually indicates it as required.
Websites and mobile apps collect a wide variety of data using the forms. Most of these forms have required fields which means the user must fill these fields in order to submit the form successfully.
A salesperson fills out order forms for a customer. The company ships orders directly to customers, so a shipping address is required. The salesperson sees the field in bold.
Best Practice Required fields should be indicated with either a symbol or text, not just color. When providing an indicator for a required field, it should be placed right before the form field. This allows a screen reader to read the indicator to a screen reader user right before the user activates the field.
We need to indicate which fields are required by adding required text to the label. We should also provide a star or asterisk symbol (this is the visual indication of the mandatory form fields) We need to use colour to identify if a form control is required.
