To search for a specific patent, simply type the number in the search box and click the pn (patent number) button, as shown below, and click the search button. The resulting patent will appear both in the search results list pane and in the document viewer pane in text format.
To start a quick lookup, enter a single patent or publication number and select the Search button. The contents of a patent application can be confidential information, if they have not yet become public knowledge. It will become public knowledge when the patent application is published, which is a mandatory step in the patent application process. (Refer to New products, processes and inventions (patents).)

Patent law places a fairly low threshold on what is considered a public disclosure. Although you can disclose some information about an invention (you can describe an invention without giving details), almost any disclosure without limitation or obligation of secrecy may constitute a public disclosure.
Can I obtain a patent and keep my invention secret? No. Patents are granted by patent offices in exchange for a full disclosure of the invention. In general, the details of the invention are then published and made available to the public at large.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Public Search Facility located in Alexandria, VA provides the public access to patent and trademark information in a variety of formats including on-line, microfilm, and print. Trained staff are available to assist public users.
The Invention Secrecy Act of 1951 requires the government to impose secrecy orders on certain patent applications that contain sensitive information, thereby restricting disclosure of the invention and withholding the grant of a patent.
