To remove a retention tag from a mailbox, you unlink the tag from the retention policy. When you unlink a retention policy tag (RPT) for a default folder, the default mailbox tag applies to all items in that folder. When you unlink a personal tag, its no longer available to the user.
To change the retention policy for a particular folder, click Settings (gear icon on top-right) and click View all Outlook settings. Click on Mail Retention Policies. Select the retention policy from the list you want to disable and click the minus icon () to remove and disable the particular retention policy.
In the Details pane, press and hold (or right-click) SuppressRetentionPolicyUI, and then select Modify. In the Value data box, enter 1, and then select OK. Note The default value of the registry key is 0. If you set the value to 1, all UI that are related to the retention policy will be hidden.
Edit the retention policy Go to the Microsoft Purview compliance portal. Select Data lifecycle management Microsoft 365 Retention Policies. Select the policy that you want to edit, and then select Edit Policy.

What is an email retention policy? Email retention settings define a period of time until items within an outlook folder will expire/delete. The retention period begins from the date of creation for emails that you send or the date of receipt for emails that you receive.
