You own your music Signing a record deal means signing away some of (sometimes all of) the rights to your music. Record labels determine who profits what percentage from your musics earnings and with an increased number of stakeholders involved, the less money youre set to earn from your own music.
The simplest way to end a management agreement is to let the time run out. The length of the agreement, that is, how long the manager has a job, is established in the term provision. It is usually in the artists best interest to keep the initial term as short as possible, perhaps one or two years.
The recording contract will usually require the artist to sign to the label exclusively. This means that they cant record for another label without permission, nor can they leave the contract if theyre unhappy. The label, however, remains free to sign and promote as many artists as it wishes.
Have a lawyer help you negotiate the contract. Try to limit the term of the contract. The shorter the contract, the sooner you can either leave or renegotiate the contract. Have your lawyer build in some ways to get out of the contract if the relationship goes south or if things dont work out the way you want them to.
The contract period usually runs from six to 12 months after the release of the last recording, the last asset under the contract. The contract period limits the freedom of the artist, because they wont be able to easily move from one label to another.
HOW TO GET SIGNED TO A RECORD LABEL? Make the Best Album or Demo You Can. Build a Fanbase and Build Momentum. Consider a Publishing Deal First. Build Music Industry Connections. Improve Your Sound.
If youve entered a valid contract, there are still ways to break it under the following circumstances: The other party breaks its promise. The other party has bdocHubed its fiduciary duty. Both parties consent to end the contract.
When you sign with a recording label, you are agreeing to make sound recordings and audiovisual recordings (i.e., music videos) exclusively for them. This means that during the Term of the contract, you cannot record or release music for anyone besides the label.
