ing to the legend of the Charter Oak, on the night of October 31, 1687, Joseph Wadsworth spirited the Royal Charter of 1662 out of Sanfords Tavern and the clutches of Sir Edmund Andros, ran across the bridge over the Little River, and deposited it in the hollow of an ancient oak tree on the grounds of Samuel
The name Charter Oak stems from the local legend in which a cavity within the tree was used in late 1687 as a hiding place for the Charter of 1662. This much regarding the charter is history: King Charles II granted the Connecticut Colony an unusual degree of autonomy in 1662.
Deep-rooted in the historic tradition of Connecticut, the Charter Oak is one of the most colorful and docHub symbols of the spiritual strength and love of freedom which inspired our Colonial forebears in their militant resistance to tyranny.
This white oak is a third generation off-spring of the famous Charter Oak in Hartford, Connecticut. ing to tradition, Connecticuts Royal Charter of 1662 was hidden within the hollow of the tree to thwart its confiscation by the English governor-general.
During tense negotiations with Connecticuts governors in a candle-lit room, the tapers were suddenly extinguished and the charter was whisked away. Captain Joseph Wadsworth is credited with seizing the momentand the charter. He hid the rolled parchment in a cavity of the giant oak so Andros could not find it.
On August 21, 1856, a violent storm felled the Charter Oak Tree which was estimated to be nearly 1,000 years old. A monument was erected in 1905 at the location of the fallen tree. It stands at the corner of Charter Oak Avenue and Charter Oak Place in downtown Hartford.
You can read more about this incident at cthistory.org. The original Charter Oak fell during a lightning storm in August 1856. At that point, the tree was 21 feet in circumference and perhaps as much as a thousand years old. A funeral and a parade were held upon its death, and speeches were given in its honor.
