Usually when inconclusive lie detector results arise a second test will produce a conclusive opinion. Tests can also produce inconclusive results if the polygraph examination is not carried out in a controlled environment.
At the risk of oversimplification, critics, who often dont understand polygraph testing, classify inconclusive test results as errors. In a real life setting an inconclusive result simply means the examiner is unable to render a definite diagnosis of truth or deception.
The American Polygraph Association, which sets standards for testing, says that polygraphs are highly accurate, citing an accuracy rate above 90 percent when done properly.
The accuracy (i.e., validity) of polygraph testing has long been controversial. An underlying problem is theoretical: There is no evidence that any pattern of physiological reactions is unique to deception. An honest person may be nervous when answering truthfully and a dishonest person may be non-anxious.
If your polygraph remains inconclusive, that doesnt necessarily mean you wont get the job. But the government may look to see what continued to cause the inconclusive results, whether it was a medication, or a specific issue that caused red flags in the examination.
A polygraph test may be required as an add-on requirement to a Top Secret or TS/SCI clearance depending upon the job or hiring organization. The CIA is an example of an organization that requires all of its employees to pass a full-scope polygraph test even its cleaning staff!
There are several factors that could cause the results of a polygraph examination to be rendered as Inconclusive. Some of these factors include improper question formulation based on bad case facts. The lack of fear by the examinee of getting caught in a lie is sometimes a reason for this result.
Here are some tips to try: If you want to beat the test, your best bet is to stay upset, fearful and confused throughout the entire test. Take time before answering any question. Alter your breathing during control questions, but return to normal breathing before answering the next question.
