When you leave a submission comment (sometimes called an assignment comment), it is visible only to people who have the ability to grade assignments. This means that your instructor(s) can see the comments, but other students cannot.

How do students view grade comments in Canvas?

View comments left on a Canvas assignment In you Canvas course click Grades. You will know an assignment has comments attached to it when you see the conversation bubble icon. To view the comments, click on the assignment. Comments on the assignment will appear in the right corner of the assignment page.

Can students see assignment comments in Canvas if grades are hidden?

Feedback/comments along with the score are hidden from students until the instructor posts the assignments grades. Total course grade also is hidden from students until the instructor posts the assignments grades. Instructor must remember to post grades once ready to release grades and feedback to students.

Students can see comments from the instructor on the Grades page. Most comments are located in the assignment sidebar. If you marked up an assignment directly in an assignment submission using inline comments or annotations, the student can use the View Feedback button in assignments submission details page.

Open the SpeedGrader for the assignment. Click the eye icon in the upper left corner. Select the Hide Grades option. To hide grades/comments for a particular section (or sections), select the Specific Sections option, then select the desired sections.
