Because creditors report debt settlement to the credit bureaus, it can indeed have a negative impact on your credit score and can stay on your credit report for years to come. However, chances are, even before your debt was settled, your credit score likely took a hit from missed payments.
Once a default judgment is entered, the debt collector can garnish your wages, seize personal property, and have money taken out of your bank account.. Like we said earlier, you can run, but you cannot hide from debt collectors. Here is the bottom line: ignoring a debt collector is almost always a bad decision.
And if you have multiple debt collections on your credit report, paying off a single collections account may not docHubly raise your credit scores. But if you have a recent debt collection and its the only negative item on your credit report, paying it off could have a positive effect on your score.
The following terms and conditions should be included in a settlement. Original creditor and collection agents company name. Date the letter was written. Your name. Your account number. Outstanding balance owed on the account (optional) Amount agreed to as settlement.
Summary: Ultimately, its better to pay off a debt in full than settle. This will look better on your credit report and help you avoid a lawsuit. If you cant afford to pay off your debt fully, debt settlement is still a good option.
If you settle for a lesser amount, you and the collection agency can agree in writing that the debt will be accepted at a lower rate and be reported as paid in full or paid as agreed. The account will still stay on your credit history, but it may have less of a negative impact over time.
Start by offering cents on every dollar you owe, say around 20 to 25 cents, then 50 cents on every dollar, then 75. The debt collector may still demand to collect the full amount that you owe, but in some cases they may also be willing to take a slightly lower amount that you propose.
