Its a lot easier than you think, and as full disclosure before we jump into this, I work at Microsoft as a full-time employee. All right, well, lets jump into it. Im going to jump on to my PC here and I have Excel 365. This comes with Office 365. Its the latest and greatest version. If you dont have Excel, you could also go to office.com, sign in. Its entirely for free and you could use Excel there. So Im going to open up Excel that I have on my desktop and what youll see here is I have a table of data with here in the one column I have the years and in the other column I have conference attendees for those different years. Descriptive comes from the word describe and so it typically means to describe something. Descriptive statistics is essentially describing the data through methods such as graphical representations, measures of central tendency and measures of variability.

When examining the distribution of a quantitative variable, one should describe the overall pattern of the data (shape, center, spread), and any deviations from the pattern (outliers).
How to read a graph Determine the type of graph. Read the title or legend. Examine any other text. Identify the variables on the axes and what they represent. Observe the x-axis and y-axis. Determine what each number on the graph means. Identify patterns in the data. Find where your data falls on the graph.
Descriptive Statistics Mean and Standard Deviation are most clearly presented in parentheses: The sample as a whole was relatively young (M = 19.22, SD = 3.45). The average age of students was 19.22 years (SD = 3.45).
Comments should reflect a fresh look on the new data to be published and tell the most interesting messages that can be extracted from the data including unexpected results. It should be avoided to always follow the standard analysis and to report on the same characteristics of the data.
