This video tutorial explains how to create a footnote-style citation in Chicago format. The first step is to have a bibliography entry and a quote with the page number. The next step is to write the footnote. OWL Purdue is a useful website for formatting footnotes. It's important to note that the example on OWL Purdue is for citations without a bibliography page. If you are using footnotes or endnotes as the only method of citation, you need to include all publication information. However, if you have a bibliography page, you can use a shortened citation with just the author's last name and a short version of the title.

Each time a source is quoted or paraphrased, a superscript number is placed in the text, which corresponds to a footnote or endnote containing details of the source. Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page, while endnotes appear on a separate page at the end of the text.
Full footnote: Surname of author(s), Title of chapter in sentence case, In Editor(s) (ed(s).) Title of book in sentence case. (City published: Publisher, Year). Page range of chapter:relevant page(s).
Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.
Click or tap within your document content where you want to reference a footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Note the newly created footnote, at the bottom of the current page or endnote, at the end of the document. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote.
Footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear throughout your paper. Each note should have a unique number; dont use the same number again even if you cite the same source repeatedly. Footnote numbers are usually placed at the end of the relevant clause or sentence.
Basic format to reference personal communications Format for footnotes for personal communications: A. Author, Title of Personal Communication [format], day month year, Name of Collection, Name of Archive, Location of Archive, Box or Series Number.
Go to References, then click Cross-reference. Change the Reference type dropdown to Footnote and leave the Insert as hyperlink box checked. Select the footnote you are referring back to from the list of all the footnotes in the document (For which footnote) and click Insert.
