Types of accreditation. There are three main types of accreditation: national, regional, and specialized accreditation that apply to certain academic programs.

What Is an Accreditation Self-Study? During an accreditation self-study, an institution or program examines its structure, evaluates its effectiveness, and makes a note of strengths and weaknesses. It then puts together a plan to make improvements or modifications as needed.
Self-assessment provides students with an opportunity to self-evaluate, or make judgments about their learning process and products of learning, based on criteria that they have agreed on with their instructor.
The purpose of accreditation is to provide a means by which to evaluate product, service, individual, organization or system against established standards or measures. Accreditation is a mechanism that seeks to reassure external stakeholders that quality and safety standards are demonstrated.
The Self-Study Report is the primary document your program uses to demonstrate its compliance with all applicable ABET criteria and policies. The Self-Study is the foundation for the review teams judgment of whether the program meets our criteria for accreditation.
Once your application has been approved, you will have one year to schedule and take the exam. During this process, you will need to pay the examination fee, which is $380 for APA members and $550 for non-members.
The internship experience (minimum 1500 hours) must be completed in no less than 9 months and no more than 24 months. Clarification: Internships may be conducted on a full or part-time basis. Only School Psychology programs will be accepted at 1500 hour or for 9-10 month internships.
The goal of accreditation is to ensure that institutions of higher education meet acceptable levels of quality. Accreditation in the United States involves non-governmental entities (accrediting organizations) as well as federal and state government agencies (these three entities are formally known as the Triad).
The accreditation process is a comprehensive review of a schools mission, faculty qualifications, and curricula, and the process includes self-evaluations, peer-reviews, committee reviews, and the development of in-depth strategic plans.
