Answer: Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is the combination of software, encryption technologies, and services that enables entities to protect the security of their communications and business transactions on networks.
In a nutshell, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is used to manage pairs of public and private keys and bind them to the identities of entities, such as persons and organizations, through the issuance of electronic documents called digital certificates.
Click the Configuration tab and go to Authentication Public Key Certificates. The server is configured by default to connect to a PKI Services manager on the local host. Click Edit. For PKI server, specify your PKI Services Manager host name or IP address.
PKI Works By Authenticating Users and Servers The web client (for example) connects to the Amazon.com web server to get the servers certificate and public key. The client then uses its store of trusted root certificates and the chain of trust to verify whether that sites certificate was issued by a trusted CA.
One of the most common applications of the PKI framework is Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols. SSL -- and its successor, Transport Layer Security (TLS) -- help establish the authenticated and encrypted links between different networked computers used in PKI.
