Between 1940 and 1960, the amount of mail doubled in The United States. Thats largely because companies began using computers to send automated mailings. Soon, the flood of mail sent by banks, advertisers, and other businesses was overwhelming postal workers. The Postal Service needed a solution. In 1963, the Zone Improvement Plan divided the country into ten regions and assigned five digits increasing in specificity, from region, to large sorting centers, to smaller post offices. Where previously mail workers had to figure out which post office went with which address, now the zip code provided that information for them. The government promoted the new system with a cartoon character, Mr. ZIP, and a song from a zip-code lovin band called The Swingin Six. There are three main parts to the 5-digit ZIP Code as designated by the USPS. The national area, the city or region, and the delivery area. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has segmented the country into 10 ZIP Code areas.
ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.
The current postal codes in the United States range from 00001 99950. The lowest and highest of these postal codes are both specific to areas in Alaska; The 00001 code is for the N Dillingham area, and the postal code 99950 is for Ketchikan, AK.
The numbering system starts in the east and moves west, so the 0s are in Maine, Connecticut, and Vermont, the 1s are Delaware, New York and Pennsylvania, all the way to ZIPs starting with 9 in Alaska, Hawaii and California.
The first number of the five-digit code signifies the region which the address is located in, a number that grows from the east coast to the west. For example, Eastern states such as Maine and New York begin with 0 or 1, whereas the Western states of California and Washington begin with a 9.
In general, the first three digits designate a sectional center facility, the mail sorting and distribution center for an area. A sectional center facility may have more than one three-digit code assigned to it.
To create a personal Zip, a postal customer would go to a postal web site, authenticate who they are, much as they do today to sign up for Informed Delivery, and provide their current address and, optionally, email address. The system would provide them their own 11 (or 12) digit Personal Zip Code.
A ZIP Code is a 5-digit number that specifies an individual destination post office or mail delivery area. ZIP Codes determine the destination of letters for final sorting and delivery. Each ZIP Code designates a collection of delivery routes used by mail carriers and areas serviced by the USPS.
