You can remove the Read Only attribute in Windows Explorer, File Explorer, or the WordPerfect File Open window by right-clicking on the filename, choosing Properties, and then un-ticking the Read Only box.
With all that said, I'm very happy to hear that WordPerfect is still around. It's not often that you hear about apps that have been around for 40-plus years, especially ones that aren't the top dog in their category.
You can also open that kind of WPD file with LibreOffice Writer, FreeOffice TextMaker, Microsoft Word, and Canvas. If you're on a Mac, try NeoOffice. LibreOffice and FreeOffice can open and edit the file, but then you have to choose a different document file format to save it to when you're done, like DOCX or DOC.
Here's an easy, free method of converting your old WordPerfect files to Microsoft Word. Open Microsoft Word. From the FILE menu, choose Open. In the new window which appears, click on the drop-down menu which reads "All Word Documents..." From the drop-down menu, choose WORDPERECT 6.
