hi there my names Bruce rain from bronchus creations and in this video Im going to be demonstrating how to repair a broken trace on a printed circuit board a little while ago I did a video on repairing and damaged or lifted pads on a printed circuit board and this was very well received so I thought I would continue this and show how to repair damaged traces now traces can get damaged in a number of ways they can just get damaged by accident you get a nick in the in the trace but I work primarily with vintage Macintosh computers and most of the trace damage I see is from corrosion caused by leaky electrolytic capacitors or leaky batteries or from poor storage you know maybe moisture gets onto them and now and they get corroded that way so firstly lets go over some of the things that youre going to need are you obviously going to need a soldering iron it doesnt need to be the best soldering iron out there but I would recommend a soldering station rather than just an all-in-one sold

It depends on the extent of the damage. If there is just a single fried component, you can try to replace it. If the damage is more extensive, you might have to replace the entire board. In either case, youll need to troubleshoot to find the source of the problem.
How can I cut PCB tracks? The best way to cut a track is to cut through it in two places with a sharp knife and remove a copper section. Caution!!! Use a good quality knife and dont press too hard to avoid breaking the blade.
HOW-TO: PCB Trace Repair With a Wire Jumper Step 1: Scrape away resist from repair areas. Step 2: Clean and tin exposed contact areas. Step 3: Choose a strip of wire to replace the conductor. STEP 4: Strip and tin each end of wire jumper. STEP 5: Solder one end of the wire. STEP 6: Form wire as needed.
You should use enameled wire, the same type of wire you would use on a transformer or an electromagnet. It has an enameled coating, which means that it is insulated, making it very functional inside a printed circuit board. Nonetheless, this enameled coating comes off very easily with the heat of the soldering iron.
Use the free multimeters probe to touch a single spot on the board. Then using your finger with the foil move it over the components touching the soldered parts. Thus you will cover more area quicker and when you hear the multimeter beeping - you have found your track on the PCB.
If you lifted a trace mid-line (not at a pad), then trim the lifted part, scrape solder mask off at either end, and solder the wire directly to the exposed trace (being careful not to lift any MORE trace along the way!).
