Most types of photo damage can be restored. Dont throw your precious photos just yet.
Therefore, when making digital copies and restorations of tintypes, the most important step of the process is getting a good scan of the original. This is one case where you do not want to use your scanners default settings. Doing so will get you an image that looks exactly like what your eyes see.
Scanning a tintype once or twice wont hurt it. Scanning it hundreds of times will. Just be very careful putting it on the scanneryou could scratch both the tintype AND the scanner glass. If you set it down gently and then dont move it while its touching the glass you should be fine.
A tintype, also known as melainotype or ferrotype, is an old style of photograph that creates a photographic image on a thin sheet of metal or iron that has been coated with a dark lacquer or enamel.
You can expect a digital file within 1-3 days of your session and the physical plate within 10-15 days of your session. How long will my tintype last? Tintypes are extremely unique photos due to the process and materials involved and can last 100 years+ making them incredible heirlooms.
We are also able to help you to restore your old images to their original beauty with our restoration service. Our team is happy to send you a prepaid mailing label to send in your case. We docHub out to you when receiving the package to discuss the details of your work.
For display, the tintype should be supported evenly on a mount or lie flat. Light levels should be kept as low as possible, and the duration of the exposure should be limited. Its best to exhibit sensitive materials for short periods of time, or instead create a facsimile for exhibition.
Faded colours can be digitally restored by correcting contrasts, colour casts and shadows. Remove objects, airbrush faces and edit backgrounds to craft the perfect family photos. Missing sections from damaged photos can be masterfully rebuilt and recreated.
