Donation receipts must contain the name and address of the charity as well as its registration number. These details must also match what the CRA has on file in its List of Charities and Other Qualified Donees. Additionally, receipts must contain the location of issue, the date and value of the donation.
You should always have the following information on your donation receipts: Name of the organization. Donors name. Recorded date of the donation. Amount of cash contribution or fair market value of in-kind goods and services. Organizations 501(c)(3) status.
Each donor receipt should include the name of the donor as well. Many donor receipts also include the charitys address and EIN, although not required. The donor, however, should have records of the charitys address. Donor receipts should include the date of the contribution.
For contributions of cash, check, or other monetary gift (regardless of amount), you must maintain a record of the contribution: a bank record or a written communication from the qualified organization containing the name of the organization, the amount, and the date of the contribution.
Generally, for the first $200 you donate, you will receive a federal tax credit of 15%. For donations over $200, the federal tax credit rate increases to 29%. On top of the federal tax credit, you may also be eligible for a provincial tax credit, depending on where you live.
You should keep your official donation receipts for six years after the end of the tax year you made a claim for, in case the Canada Revenue Agency asks to see them. If you did your taxes late, keep your receipts for six years from the date you submitted your return.
