hey there its john with excel campus and in this video im going to share a tip for improving performance with your excel tables [Music] so the tip here is to not use whole column references when youre creating tables and i stumbled upon this by really making a mistake a bit of a bonehead move here when i was creating a table i should have known better but i did accidentally use a whole column reference and that can really slow down the performance of your tables now if you dont know what a whole column reference is dont worry im going to explain that in this video the video will also be packed with a bunch of tips and tricks for working with tables and ranges so im sure youll find a lot of value in it so lets jump right in here and this is the table that im having an issue with now this table is only 250 rows long and seven columns wide and it does not contain any formulas so its a really relatively small table the performance issue that im experiencing is if i go over her

To ONLY protect or lock individual cells in Excel without locking the whole worksheet: Select the whole worksheet using either Ctrl + A or click in the top left corner of the sheet (little pale arrow). Right click any cell and select Format Cells . Now select the cells or the range that you want to protect.
Here are the steps you can follow to lock cells in a excel: Click on the cell(s) you wish to lock. To open the Format Cells pop-up window, navigate to the Home tab in your Excel spreadsheet. To do so, select Format from the right-hand menu. From the drop-down menu, select Lock Cell.
Select the cell in the upper-left corner of the range you want to remain scrollable. Select View tab, Windows Group, click Freeze Panes from the menu bar. Excel inserts two lines to indicate where the frozen panes begin.
Remove a table style Select any cell in the table from which you want to remove the current table style. On the Home tab, click Format as Table, or expand the Table Styles gallery from the Table Tools Design tab (the Table tab on a Mac). Click Clear. The table will be displayed in the default table format.
Switch to full or normal screen view in Excel To switch to full screen view, press CTRL+SHIFT+F1. To return to normal screen view, press CTRL+SHIFT+F1 again.
*Immediately after you create a table, you can also click Undo on the Quick Access Toolbar to convert that table back to a range.
If you want to maintain the original cell reference when you copy it, you lock it by putting a dollar sign ($) before the cell and column references. For example, when you copy the formula =$A$2+$B$2 from C2 to D2, the formula stays exactly the same. This is an absolute reference.
Create a table, then convert it back into a Range. On the worksheet, select a range of cells that you want to format by applying a predefined table style. On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Format as Table.
Most Excel users figure out how to lock these references by either toggling through the options with the F4 key or using the $ (dollar sign) symbol in front of the column and/or row references.
Click any cell within a table, and then press Ctrl + A twice to select the whole table including the headers. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Clear Clear Formats.
