hello everyone Anthony Sequeira here with the Cisco Learning Network and I want to go ahead and pick up on our subject of access control list troubleshooting and I want to talk about something that will drive students a bit crazy especially when theyamp;#39;re just starting out with these access control lists the students have enough to worry about especially with an extended access control list and then what gets added to the mix of course is direction this directionality concept of inbound versus outbound and where to place the particular access control list well in order to practice with this I went ahead and just quickly got together a three router topology itamp;#39;s amazing how much we can practice with just three simple routers so I just strung them together like this router one connected to router two connected to router three to distinguish them I put the 10 network in here and I put the 192 network over here so that really jumps out at you weamp;#39;ve got 0 0 interfaces

An access control list (ACL) is a list of access control entries (ACE). Each ACE in an ACL identifies a trustee and specifies the access rights allowed, denied, or audited for that trustee. The security descriptor for a securable object can contain two types of ACLs: a DACL and an SACL.
An access control list (ACL) is a list of rules that specifies which users or systems are granted or denied access to a particular object or system resource. Access control lists are also installed in routers or switches, where they act as filters, managing which traffic can access the network.
An ACL in network configuration can filter traffic going through the router, or traffic to and from the router.
There are two types of ACLs: Discretionary Access Control List (DACL): Specifies which users and groups have or do not have access to an object. System Access Control List (SACL): Governs the auditing of access attempts to an object.
ACLs filter traffic as it passes through a router or switch and permit or deny packets crossing specified interfaces or VLANs. An ACL is a sequential collection of permit and deny conditions that apply to packets.
Inwhen you are running traffic coming INTO the interface through an ACL. Outwhen you are running traffic leaving the interface through an ACL. If you want to filter packets that is coming in, you want to use the in; and if you want to filter packets that is coming out then you use the out.
Reasons to use an ACL: Restricted network traffic for better network performance. A level of security for network access specifying which areas of the server/network/service can be accessed by a user and which cannot. Granular monitoring of the traffic exiting and entering the system.
An access control list on a router consists of a table that stipulates which kinds of traffic are allowed to access the system. The router is placed between the incoming traffic and the rest of the network or a specific segment of the network, such as the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
