The short answer is unfortunately no, not all stains can be removed, and here are three reasons why. The longer a stain is left untreated, the less likely it is to be removed.
To fix a streaky job, first strip as much of that color off as you can. Scrub the surface of an oil-based with a Scotch-Brite pad and mineral spirits until the streaks are all gone. If you have a water-based stain, scrub the area using a lacquer thinner. Apply white vinegar to the area, let it soak in for a couple minutes. Pour salt onto the stained area, then work it in with your fingers. Put the garment in the sun and let it air dry. Wash as usual. Check to see if the stains gone, repeat the steps if not. How to Remove Set-In Stains from Workwear - Red Kap Red Kap how-to-remove-set-in-stains Red Kap how-to-remove-set-in-stains
Wearing rubber gloves, dip a brush into a bowl of bleach and apply it lightly to the stained area. Allow the bleach to sit for a few hours as the stain fades to its original color. Remove the bleach with a damp sponge, and apply vinegar to neutralize the wood and prevent further lightening.
Simply use a lint-free rag soaked in mineral spirits or paint thinner to rub the areas of over-applicationwherever the stain has puddled or is thick and stickyto remove the excess stain. Areas of over-application may be noticeable because the stain is darker. Start with light pressure (this may be all you need). Douse the stain with white vinegar, then apply a paste made of equal parts baking soda and vinegar. If this doesnt work, immerse the item overnight in a bucket of water containing a few tablespoons of detergent and vinegar. Rinse and wash the following morning. Apply a few drops of gentle dish soap to the stain. Rub in the soap with clean fingers until the detergent is completely coating the stain. Next, apply a tablespoon of baking soda over the soap and scrub it into the fabric for two minutes (you can use a soft bristle toothbrush for a more efficient scrub).
Condition Your Boards. To make your boards absorb evenly, use a wood conditioner after youve sanded the boards. Softwoods like cedar, pine or ash dont always absorb and can turn out blotchy. A wood conditioner will stabilize the wood and allow it to absorb the stain for a consistent golden glow.
