ACL reconstruction is typically an outpatient procedure. The surgeon will remove the damaged ligament, then replace it with a new oneeither an autograft (tissue taken from another part of the body, such as the kneecap tendons or hamstring) or an allograft (tissue from a deceased donor).
Most often, surgeons recommend ACL reconstruction after it tears. For this procedure, the surgeon will remove the damaged ligament and replace it with a new one, called a graft, which can be made of tissue from the patients own kneecap tendons or hamstringsor from a deceased donor.
Not only is the procedure effective, but repaired tendons perform like new. Reconstruction patients even 20 years later revealed excellent performance, with over 85% still active. However, over 40% revealed some degree of osteoarthritis.
ACL reconstruction surgery is performed using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques, in which a combination of fiber optics, small incisions and small instruments are used. A somewhat larger incision is needed, however, to obtain the tissue graft.
Types of ACL surgery ACL surgery usually involves a complete rebuilding of the ligament, as repair of the ligament is not usually possible. This procedure, called ACL reconstruction, is the current standard of care for surgically treating a torn ACL.
A torn ACL cant heal on its own, but its possible to live with it (especially if you have a low-grade tear). But if youre an athlete or want to return to physical activity, youll need surgery to repair your ACL. Most people choose to have an ACL tear surgically repaired.
Very minor tears (sprains) may heal with non-surgical treatments and regenerative medicine therapy. But full ACL tears cannot be healed without surgery. If your activities do not involve making pivoting movements on the knee, physical therapy rehabilitation may be all you need.
But the new research, which focused on 80 injured knees, found that many torn ACLs can apparently knit themselves back together and heal naturally reducing the need for expensive and often painful surgery.
