The patellar tendon graft (PTG) has always been the gold standard for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Yet, most orthopedic surgeons prefer hamstring grafts for younger athletes and cadaver grafts for older patients.
Treatment Rest. General rest is necessary for healing and limits weight bearing on your knee. Ice. When youre awake, try to ice your knee at least every two hours for 20 minutes at a time. Compression. Wrap an elastic bandage or compression wrap around your knee. Elevation.
Some mild, partial ACL tears can heal on their own, while other tears require surgery. The only way to know if surgery is the right choice for your ACL injury is to have Dr. Nickson evaluate your injury using advanced diagnostic techniques.
Partial ACL Tears A partial injury means that only one of the two bundles was torn. Therefore, the second bundle is intact. Many patients who sustain a partial ACL tear will be able to return to their prior level of activity without complaints of buckling, instability or giving way.
Overall, the length of recovery from a complete ACL injury is approximately 9-12 months if you have a reconstruction surgery. Recovery is shorter without surgery (approximately 3 months).
The patellar tendon and hamstring autografts are the most common choices for ACL reconstruction. The patellar tendon runs from the knee cap (patella) to the lower leg bone (tibia). Surgeons have the most experience with this autograft and it is the most widely used.
Most often, surgeons recommend ACL reconstruction after it tears. For this procedure, the surgeon will remove the damaged ligament and replace it with a new one, called a graft, which can be made of tissue from the patients own kneecap tendons or hamstringsor from a deceased donor.
That process can take nine or 10 months. Although some exceptional athletes can return to sports in six months, a more realistic scenario after an ACL tear is a recovery time of at least eight to nine months.
Very minor tears (sprains) may heal with non-surgical treatments and regenerative medicine therapy. But full ACL tears cannot be healed without surgery. If your activities do not involve making pivoting movements on the knee, physical therapy rehabilitation may be all you need.
ACL injuries can either be complete or partial. While complete ACL tears almost always require surgery, partial ACL tears may be treated effectively with nonsurgical methods. ACL tears are graded by severity and are called sprains (a sprain is a stretch or tear in a ligament).
