A do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is a legal document that means a person has decided not to have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempted on them if their heart or breathing stops. People who choose to have a DNR usually have a terminal illness or other serious medical condition.
PREHOSPITAL DO NOT RESUSCITATE (DNR) FORM I, , request limited emergency care as herein described. I understand DNR means that if my heart stops beating or if I stop breathing, no medical procedure to restart breathing or heart functioning will be instituted.
Documentation in the patients medical record of a decision not to do CPR must include both a Physicians Order and an entry in the Progress Notes. Use of the standardized DNR Order Form is preferred, but is not required in cases where the attending physician prefers a narrative method of documentation.
POLST addresses a range of life-sustaining measures and allows a person to choose treatment, as well as forego treatment. A DNR only addresses resuscitation and only allows for forgoing treatment.
Question: What happens if you resuscitate someone with a DNR? If you attempt resuscitation on a person who has a valid DNR order, you open yourself up to lawsuit by the estate (read: family) of the person with the DNR order, especially if the attempt is successful and they are indeed brought back to life.
Under the EMSA/CMA approved Prehospital DNR Form, do not resuscitate (DNR) means no chest compressions, defibrillation, endotracheal intubation, assisted ventilation, or cardiotonic drugs.
In some states, DNR orders go by a different name, such as Comfort One. In other states, if you are using the document outside of a hospital or other health care facility, the document may simply be called a DNR form. Here, we use DNR order because that is the most common name for the document.
A Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNRO) is a form developed by the Department of Health to identify people who do not wish to be resuscitated in the event of respiratory or cardiac arrest. A form may be obtained by downloading directly from this site. This form should only be printed on yellow paper (of any shade).
