I was a caregiver for my brother basically for his entire adult life even before he got sick. My brother could not read and write, so I was his caregiver and I went along with him to his hospital visits, his doctor visits, just to explain to him exactly what was going on and make sure he understood the things he was signing and that sort of thing. He had some liver issues, he was diabetic. And unfortunately we werent aware of Advance Directives. (soft music) Advance Directive is a legal document that shares with everyone what you will like people to know about your wishes. I dont think Ive realized the task at hand, how important it was until he actually did get sick. And unfortunately we didnt have that discussion about what he wanted if he was incapacitated and unable to make decisions for himself. So it came down to he had gotten sick, and we had to have these very difficult discussions after he was will. Its really important because a lot of times when youre sick

The most common types of advance directives are the living will and the durable power of attorney for health care (sometimes known as the medical power of attorney).
Fortunately, Ontario law states that, unless they are impossible to follow, express wishes for future care are legally binding. That means some wishes may not be upheld exactly as you planned, if that's not possible, but your wishes will be respected.
(ad-VANS duh-REK-tiv) A legal document that states a person's wishes about receiving medical care if that person is no longer able to make medical decisions because of a serious illness or injury.
What are advance directives and why are they important? Advance directives include legal documentation such as a living will, power of attorney and do not resuscitate (DNR) orders.
An advance directive allows you to decide who you want to make health care decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself. You can also use it to say what kinds of treatments you do or don't want, especially the treatments often used in a medical emergency or near the end of a person's life.
These include: Living Will. A living will is a written document that specifies what medical treatment you would or would not want in the event you are in a terminal condition or a persistent vegetative state. ... Power of Attorney. ... Health Care Instructions.
You can only make an advance directive while you are competent; nobody else can make an advance directive for you. “Competent” in this case means “able to make important decisions for yourself.” The advance directive only takes effect if you stop being competent.
A specific and common example of an advance directive is a “do not resuscitate” order (or DNR), which guides care only if your heart stops beating (cardiac arrest) or you are no longer breathing.
A Living Will, also known as a Personal Directive or Advance Directive, is a document that you use to define your personal health care wishes in the event of an emergency.
The most common types of advance directives are the living will and the durable power of attorney for health care (sometimes known as the medical power of attorney).
