Use an old stylus and press down on it through the loop. Put as much pressure on it as you can without scraping the cartridge on the record.
Try playing the record after dusting. In some cases, the dirt is on the outside of the record and the skipping will stop with simple dusting. If the skipping continues, then use a record cleaning product and a soft cloth or a record cleaning brush for a deeper clean.
Turntable Restoration Step 1: Disassemble. Remove the turntable platter, internal cover and bottom protective case. Step 2: Inspect. Inspect the electronics for any potential problems. Step 3: Replacing Electronics. Step 4: Capacitors. Step 5: Desolder. Step 6: Replace. Step 7: Solder. Step 8: Reference Designators.
Dirty Stylus/Needle Perhaps the most common and easily fixed cause of why a record player or turntable might sound distorted is a dirty stylus. The needle (more accurately known as a stylus) is the tiny diamond tip that tracks the record groove.
How do you get a stereo sound out of a vinyl record? By putting a different channel of sound on each side of the groove along with a separate magnetic coil on the stylus for each channel. Each coil sends a separate signal to the amplifier where they are played back through different speakers.
While the most common factor is dirt or dust on the record, you may also have a problem with the balance. If the arm or the stylus cartridge is not balanced properly, then you may need to improve the balance. Depending on the record player you own, the process of re-balancing your arm or cartridge may vary.
Disconnect and reconnect the RCA cables, pushing them firmly into the connections on the turntable. Try a different set of RCA cables. Disconnect the headshell. While the headshell is disconnected, clean the contacts that connect to the tonearm with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
Its likely that the wires coming from your turntable are not properly connected to the speakers. Check to make sure the wires are securely plugged into the appropriate jacks on both the turntable and speaker sides. Also, make sure that each speaker is turned on and set to the same volume level.
