When multiple quotation marks are used for quotations within quotations, keep the quotation marks together (put periods and commas inside both; put semi-colons, colons, etc., outside both).
In academic writing, you need to use quotation marks when you quote a source. This includes quotes from published works and primary data such as interviews. The exception is when you use a block quote, which should be set off and indented without quotation marks.
To create a back quote using a U.S. keyboard, press ` , which is located directly below the Esc key. This key is also used for typing the tilde ( ~ ) character if the Shift key is held while it is pressed. Doing the Alt code Alt +96 can also create a back quote.
The examples use MLA format. Use a full sentence followed by a colon to introduce a quotation. Begin a sentence with your own words, then complete it with quoted words. Use an introductory phrase naming the source, followed by a comma to quote a critic or researcher.
Quoting a quote That is to say, what do you do when youre quoting material that already contains a quote? The principle doesnt change. In American English, use double quotes for the outside quote and single quotes for the inside quote. In British English, do the opposite.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
For a direct quotation of two or more sentences with the attribution at the beginning of the first sentence, put a colon, not a comma, after the attribution and place the quotation in double quotation marks.
If a direct quotation is interrupted mid-sentence, do not capitalize the second part of the quotation. I didnt see an actual alien being, Mr. Johnson said, but I sure wish I had. In all the examples above, note how the period or comma punctuation always comes before the final quotation mark.
When researching, you may find many instances of a quotation within a quotation (that is, the author you are quoting has quoted another author) in scholarly essays. In this case, you use the single quotation marks () for the quote within the quote.
Citing a direct quote To cite a quote in APA, you always include the the authors last name, the year the source was published, and the page on which the quote can be found.
