EPUB is a common ebook format around the web, but the Kindle can't read it natively. That's okay; you can convert . epub files to Mobi files for the Kindle to read. The key is a free piece of software called Calibre(Opens in a new window).
Amazon's marketplace — Kindle Direct Publishing — accepts many file formats, including EPUBs, then converts them to the latest version of MOBI (AZW3).
If you're using anything other than a Kindle or the Kindle app, then EPUB is the better format. The only real reason to use MOBI is for compatibility with Amazon's e-reader and app, but otherwise it has no advantages over EPUB, which is a widely accepted format that is much easier to work with.
As of August 2022, you will no longer be able to send the MOBI file format to Kindles or the Kindle app using the Send to Kindle service. The MOBI file format no longer supports the newest document features, while the EPUB format is updated and accepted by Kindle devices.
What Is The Difference Between EPUB VS Mobi? The main difference between EPUB and MOBI is that EPUB is widely supported across all platforms whilst MOBI is predominantly a Kindle format. The EPUB standard is maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), a global trade and standards organization.
Starting August 1, 2021, we will no longer support MOBI files for reflowable eBooks. Use EPUB, DOCX or KPF to publish new or update reflowable eBooks.
The Best MOBI/AZW3 Converter for ePub Files If you're already planning to publish your book through Kindle Direct Publishing (the Amazon store), here's the good news: you don't have to actually convert the ePub file. When you upload an ePub to KDP, Amazon will automatically convert it for you.
If you're using anything other than a Kindle or the Kindle app, then EPUB is the better format. The only real reason to use MOBI is for compatibility with Amazon's e-reader and app, but otherwise it has no advantages over EPUB, which is a widely accepted format that is much easier to work with.
MOBI and AZW are now outdated. Newer software features on Kindle devices and in the Kindle app will not work for these files. Any MOBI/AZW files already in your library will still exist and will still open, but may not have all features available as mentioned above.
If you're using anything other than a Kindle or the Kindle app, then EPUB is the better format. The only real reason to use MOBI is for compatibility with Amazon's e-reader and app, but otherwise it has no advantages over EPUB, which is a widely accepted format that is much easier to work with.
